Hired! When Lightning Strikes Twice
Hired When Lightning Strikes TwiceHired When Lightning Strikes TwiceFor Linda Schroeder, a job in IT attracted herbei from the get-go. And when times got tough, that IT focus proved her greatest strength. For Linda Schroeder, a job in IT attracted her from the get-go. And when times got tough, that IT focus proved her greatest strength. While still a student at North Dakota State University, she interned in a company called Computerland. Schroeder didnt care that she welches in the HR department as long as she could gain experience working with information technology. She also loved sales and gained experience in both the telecommunications and travel industries, but Schroeder was always most inspired when working with a companys software systems. While working at her next job, Worldspan, a provider of travel technology to airlines and travel agencies, Schroeder was part of a Siebel software implementation. Now she was hooked on IT, and she moved on to work at Microsoft Great Plains and then later at Siebel.Three years ago, the Dallas resident decided she needed a change. Through her membership on SalesLadder, she reapplied her skills and was offered a job as a sales manager for TalentKeepers, a company that offered Web-based, integrated employee-retention solutions. Although it was a departure from her work in IT sales, she enjoyed it. I was with TalentKeepers for about two-and-a-half years and then, sadly, I got a call at the end of September letting me know that they were going to have to go out of business. So it was a whirlwind.Schroeder had been aware that the economy had diminished the companys fortunes and suspected there would be layoffs ahead. She didnt anticipate a total shutdown. So, thankfully, I had been looking a little on Ladders. But after the company closed, I started aggressively looking, and it didnt even take a month to find a job. It was not even four weeks, so I felt very, very fortunate. That was the second job I found through Ladders.Comin g home to IT salesIn a weak economy, Schroeder reasoned, it was best to play to her strongest suit and return to IT sales. Although TalentKeepers had software and assessments online, it certainly wasnt the front bro/back office type of software that I was used to. I was really excited when Exact offered me the chance to get back into this.As senior sales executive for Exact Software, Schroeder said she can assist companies struggling to stay afloat in a troubled economy With reductions going on and people trying to save money, we can show many industries that they are in fact losing money by not having systems in place to invoice effectively or keep track of their sales and their orders. Rather than face liquidation, companies should consider investing in systems to manage themselves more effectively and more seamlessly, Schroeder suggested. fruchtwein companies are working on a more slimmed-down scale. In most cases, they have had a reduction in force they have fewer people trying to do more. All you need then are systems in place to help you do that.Exact competes successfully with large companies such as Oracle, SAP and JD Edwards by claiming an international niche. Based in Delft, Netherlands, Exact releases its IT products in about 40 languages, all compliant with each countrys specifications. Schroeder recently visited the Netherlands for orientation and was impressed by the companys diversity They put all of their new hires through a class together, and we had people in the class from Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Belgium, and Mexico. It was like the United Nations. As many companies reduce spending and cut staff, Schroeder said, the key to surviving in software is understanding what matters most to customers. There was a time during the dot-com boom when everybody wanted CRM or everybody wanted ERP and you were able to dump your solution at people. And they wanted it. Everybody had it, and so they had to have it, too. It is not like that any mor e. You have to be able to go in and understand specifically what the need is of each is person within that organization. You need to be really consultative. You need to do your homework. You need to be able to show what differentiates you from other companies. And you also need to show that you are going to be a partner to them, and that you are going to be able to provide them with the support and the assistance to help them have a very successful implementation. With many top earners in the financial field out of work, some may consider a switch to a career in software. I would counsel anybody who was thinking of getting into this industry to make sure that this is something that they can be passionate about and really enjoy, Schroeder said. When confronted with a pink slip, Linda Schroeder knew that rediscovering that core of inspiration was key to finding her path again.

Advanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTC
Advanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTCAdvanced Enlisted Rank for College Credits or JROTCMany potential armed services recruits wonder if its possible for them to enter one of the branches of service at an advanced enlisted rank, provided they have college credits or experience in the Junior Reserve Officer Training korporation (JROTC). Each of the services has a different policy when it comes to offering advanced rank for those with college credits and other programs, including JROTC. Heres a guide to whats available in the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marines. Army Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy When you enter the Army as a new enlisted recruit, you typically are given the rank of private or pay grade E-1. It is the lowest rank in the service. However, those with several different types of credentials can enter at a higher level private second class (paygrade of E-2), private first class (pay grade E-3), or specialist (pay grade E-4). To join the Army as a private second class, you need one or two years of JROTC experience or 24 credits from an accredited college or university. Its also possible to join as a private second class if you earned Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts or the Gold Award in Girl Scouts, or if you completed the National Defense Cadet Corps program. To join as a pay grade E-3, private first class, you have the options of having completed Three years of JROTCOne year of Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC)48 or more college credits To join as a specialist (E-4), you must have a four-year degree at an accredited college or university. Navy Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy Recruits normally enter the Navy at the rank of seaman recruit, with pay grade E-1. Requirements to enter at higher pay grades and ranks are similar to those for the Army. To enter at the rank of seaman apprentice (pay grade E-2), you must have completed 24 credits at an accredited college or university. Alternatively, you must have complet ed two years of JROTC or reached paygrade E-2 in the Navy Sea Cadet Corps program. To enter at the rank of a seaman (pay grade E-3), you have the options of having completed Completed 48 or more college creditsReached paygrade E-3 in the Navy Sea Cadet Corps programCompleted three years in JROTCAchieved Eagle Scout as a Boy Scout or advanced to Girl Scout Gold There are programs like Navy SEAL and Nuclear Power School where if you graduate, you will be promoted to E-4. Some in the nuclear program even take the E-5 test before they even get to their first permanent duty station. Nuclear Power School is equivalent to more than 50 college credits. Air Force Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy In the Air Force, recruits normally enter at the rank of airman basic, with pay grade E-1. Again, requirements to enter at higher ranks and pay grades are similar to those for the other armed services. If you have two years of JROTC training, you can enter at the rank of airman (pay grade E-2). You also can enter at this level if you have 20 credits from an accredited college or university, or if you have achieved Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold. To enter with the rank of airman first class (pay grade E-3), you have the options of having completed Completed 45 college creditsOr three years of JROTC training Also, several awards, including the General Billy Mitchell Award, Amelia Earhart Award, and the General Carl A. Spaatz Award will qualify you to enter at the level of airman first class. There are special operations programs within the Air Force that upon completion will allow successfulindividuals that have enlisted for a period of six years to be promoted to Airman First Class (A1C).Schools like the indoctrination course Combat Controller (CCT) and Pararescue (PJ). Marine Corps Advanced Enlisted Rank Policy In the Marines, recruits normally enter the service at the rank of private. Unlike the other services, the Marines dont offer the opportunity to enter with any payg rade higher than E-2. Those who enter at E-2, with a rank of private first class, have the options of having completed Two years of JROTC or ROTCHave completed 12 credits of college classes (with a minimum grade point average of 2.3 or higher on a 4-point scale)Have achieved Eagle Scout or Girl Scout GoldHave achieved the grade of E-3 or spent 24 months in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps More on Entering with Advanced Rank Almost all recruits who join with advanced rank are paid the rate of base pay for that advanced rank right from the first day of active duty. However, in most of the services, recruits do not get to wear the rank until they graduate from basic training. Make sure the contract you sign has all of your qualifications for advance ranking and any additional steps you have to do to ensure you qualify. It is up to you to be proactive with the recruiter, or you could miss out on achieving a higher rank and pay more quickly. As with other enlistment incentives, advanced enl istment rank must be included on your enlistment contract.

5 Common Advertising Mistakes Made By Small Businesses
5 Common Advertising Mistakes Made By Small Businesses5 Common Advertising Mistakes Made By Small BusinessesAdvertising blunders are commonplace, from mom and pop operations to the largest multinational corporations (just look at Pepsis Kendall Jenner monstrosity). While some mistakes can be attributed to bad luck, indecisiveness, or just being tone deaf, some are down to a simple lack of preparation and research. As a small business owner, you may not have the money and resources of a Fortune 500 company, but that does not mean you cannot be buttoned-up. Here are 5 mistakes you need to avoid in order to create a truly successful ad campaign. There Is No Solid Business and/or Marketing Plan Right out of the gate, this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. If you dont have a grasp of your business model, and how you want to market it, then how will anyone know what to respond to? You may have something rough written on paper, somewhere, and in the back of your mind, you kin d of know where you want to go, and how you want to get there, but thats not good enough. Sit down and take several hours, or even days, figuring out the ins and outs of your business. What are the potential roadblocks? What milestones do you want to achieve, and when do you expect to see a profit? Doing this will not only help you formulate a marketing plan, but it will also be vital for bringing in new investment opportunities. Just watch a few episodes of Shark Tank, and see how quickly the entrepreneurs without a business plan are kicked to the curb. The Message Is All Me, Me, Me Its not surprising that this mistake is made. After all, many small business owners have poured blood, sweat, and tears into the start-up, and theyre proud of it. Now, they want to tell the world how awesome this new product or service is. And that is a huge mistake. No-one cares how good your product is. No-one cares that youve got an amazing new service. No-one looks forward to yet mora selling me ssages, and they certainly dont care that you say youre different. All they want to know is what is in it for them. How will it save them time or money? How will it improve their lives? How will they be able to spend just a little money to get a huge satisfaction return? Make your message about them. Use you and your in your pitches. Focus on their needs, and they will buy if you have a way to address them. The Business Is Inadequately Prepared for Customers Heres the problem with a great product coupled with great advertising - it works. It works so well that it can take a small business completely by surprise, overloading it with orders that result in a dreadful first experience for the customer. Suddenly, your great product is tarnished by a broken website, orders that take months to fulfill, and customer service that is overwhelmed and constantly engaged. You do not want to be a victim of your own success. Do a soft launch first, and make sure you are fully prepared for an influx of new business. Test, test, and test again. Try to crash the website and, hopefully, you have a fully-functioning e-commerce site ready to go. Kick the tires completely before you roll out a much larger campaign. If you dont, you could find yourself getting hundreds of negative reviews, alienating customers who will never come back. The Target Audience Is elend Identified You may think that everyone can use your product or service, but advertising to everyone is advertising to no-one. It is a complete waste of time and money to throw out a campaign with a broad target. Imagine a fishing crew creating a massive net and throwing it into some random part of the ocean. Will they get what they want? Will they even get anything they can sell at the market? Chances are, theyll catch a lot, but only a fraction will be of any use. The same applies to your marketing. You need to know just who to aim it at. That means analyzing the demographics, holding focus groups to get feedback on the product or service you want to sell, and refining these results. You want to know the sex, age, occupation, hobbies, and income of the people who are most likely to buy from you. Use a laser focus to get them. Once you have established sales to this smaller audience, word of mouth will spread, and you can widen the net slightly. The Competitive Landscape Is Ignored Its highly unlikely that your business is unique. Yes, you may have put a unique spin on something, or youve created a bigger, better mousetrap. But, when push comes to shove, you are going to be going up against a lot of other companies offering basically the same products or services that you offer. And if you dont know this ahead of time, you will undoubtedly get lost in the clutter. Look at everything your closest competitors are doing. Look at the ads and social campaigns that the outliers of your industry are creating. What are they promising? Who are they aiming at? Is there a gap in the market that you can fill? Dollar Shave Club was nothing new a company selling razors in a market dominated by big brands and slick campaigns. But Dollar Shave Club created an ad so outrageous, and honest, and funny, that it went viral and created an overnight success. If they had tried to market to men in the same way as Schick and Gillette, they would have faded into obscurity. Instead, theyre thriving. Find your angle. Differentiate yourself. If it doesnt look or feel like an ad for your industry, congratulations You may just be different enough to stand out. So, learn from these five mistakes, and kick off a campaign that will really make a difference to your business.

The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable Economy
The Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyThe Challenges Women Face Today in an Unstable EconomyWomen make less money than men. Most people already know without even looking at statistics that women earn less money than men, and that women have fewer employment and advancement opportunities (despite the fact mora women hold higher degrees than men), but here are some other areas where women are disadvantaged that you might now know about 8 in 10 single-parent families are headed by women.Women are more likely to be unemployed during a recession than are men.Women are more likely to be laid off when companies downsize.More women than men work low-wage, part-time jobs.Fewer women than men meet the eligibility qualifications for unemployment benefits (because they earn lower wages and often are only given part-time hours).During a recession, mens median salaries are stagnant but womens salaries have already dropped 3%.For every dollar a man earns working full-time, female wo rkers only earn 77 cents for the same jobs. Women are also less likely to be eligible for employee benefits and employment-based retirement plans such as a 401(k).According to a Harvard study, the median net worth of unmarried women welches $12,900, compared to $26,850 for men. The study cited the wage gap as the primary cause of this inequity.Lower wages and higher expenses mean women also have fewer savings and assets than men. Womens Expenses Exceed Those of Men Men and woman pay the same high prices for food, gas, but women often bear expenses than men, with higher incomes, do not. With 8 in 10 single parent families being headed by women, it is women who have to balance the dual roles of work and parenting - not men. When dead-beat dads fail to pay child support, many women have to pick up the tab by taking on additional, low-wage jobs to try and make ends meet. Nearly every state in the U.S. has now cut funding and programs (also reduced at the federal level) that once hel ped women enforce their child support awards, trained them to re-enter the workforce, and Congress has even severely cut funding to womens business development centers beginning in 2009. Because of loopholes, changes in child support laws, and fewer affordable legal resources for women, an increasing number of men are defaulting on child support. This means more women are now paying all, or disproportionate amounts, to provide for the needs of their children. Women often pay higher insurance premiums and more out-of-pocket health care costs than men, who do not have to pay for birth control or maternity benefits, and because more women pay for health insurance for their children than do men. Womens credit scores are generally equal to or better than mens, but with lower incomes and smaller assets, to purchase a home women need to go with a subprime mortgage 30% to 40% more often than men, which means a lower down payment, but higher monthly payments. According to Erin Parrish in the Minnesota Press Women often fall victim to risky lending practices, not only because they are more likely to lack financial literacy skills, but also because they are offered subprime mortgages at a higher rate than men. Insecure lending programs are often what push women over the edge, forcing them to choose between feeding their families or paying off debt. SourceErin Parrish. Minnesota Womens Press. MoneyFeature Women are disproportionately vulnerable in todays unstable economy. August 7, 2008.

Job Offer Rejection Email Message Examples
Job Offer Rejection Email Message ExamplesJob Offer Rejection Email Message ExamplesDid you receive ajob offerthat you have decided notlage to take? When you decide to reject a job offer, it is a good idea to let the employer know as soon as possible. Nowadays, many employers are relayingjob offersvia emaille. As such, it is perfectly appropriate to respond to the offer over email, even if you have decided not to accept the offer. It is possible to be brief and to the point over email while remaining cordial and polite. A professional email will help you maintain a positive relationship with the employer. This is important because you never know when you might want to apply for another job at the company. What to Include in the Email Message When rejecting a job offer via email, you should send the email as soon as you have decided that you are not going to accept the job offer. This gives the employer time to move forward with alternative candidates. You do not need to say much in your email. Your message should be polite, brief, and to the point. It is important tokeep it professional, positive, light, and respectful. There is no need to share what you did not like about the job offer, the job, the boss, the company, or any other negative criticisms. How to Improve Your Personal Brand to Impress Employers
How to Improve Your Personal Brand to Impress Employers How to Improve Your Personal Brand to Impress Employers How to Improve Your Personal Brand to Impress Employers Back up that stellar resume with an impressive online presence. [TWEET] Your resume says a lot about your professional experience. In today's working world, however, employers want to learn much more about you than you can possibly jot down on a piece of paper. Much in the same way you research companies to determine whether you want to make a purchase or use their service offerings, employers dig deep and research you. If your resume stands out to the point an employer decides to dig deeper, you'd be well served to make sure your personal branding strategy makes you look good. Let's say you're out with some friends and you're craving some pizza. You Google pizza near me and two restaurants pop up. One of those restaurants has mouth-watering descriptions of their food, along with high-res photos. The other doesn't even have a website, and there isn't much more on their Yelp page than the confirmation that they do indeed serve pizza. Which restaurant would you choose? Much like you, employers are looking for images and other information that shows them the quality of a product (you). They're looking for further support beyond your resume for evidence that you'd be a good fit for the company culture and that you wouldn't be a detriment to the company's goals and objectives. In order to improve your chances of being hired by that deep digging employer, try these tips for building a personal brand. Clean up your social media pages. Step number one in your personal branding strategy should be to clean up your act on social media. Time to embrace adulthood and remove those photos you posted in college at the local watering hole. Employers want to know that you're adept at interacting with others and that you have a social life, but they don't want to see you dancing on tables and tossing back beers. Delete any photos on your social media channels that paint you in a negative light and replace them with photos that showcase your more positive, more professional side. Publish original content. One of the best ways to build your personal brand to show that you're well versed in your craft is to create content that showcases your expertise. Blogs offer an excellent outlet for content creation and personal brand building. There are tons of free, high quality blog templates available on platforms like Wordpress, so select one and start writing. Build promotion of the content you create on social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter into your personal branding strategy and grow your audience and traffic to your site. When employers see people engaging with your advice, you'll effectively elevate yourself over other candidates. Create a portfolio. In addition to showcasing your expertise, go ahead and show off your work as well. Have you worked on graphic design projects, or can you put together a case study that shows how you successfully orchestrated a project? Whatever the work may be, if you did it well, show it off. Just as is the case with blogs, so is the same with portfolios when building a personal brand. There are many free options to select from, so pick one that best represents your personality and upload your work for all to see. By starting with these tips, you can get your personal brand headed in the right direction. As you continue to touch things up, momentum will build and employers will take notice, thereby placing you at the top of their minds. Ready to write the next chapter of your career? How to Ask for Help at a New Job - The Muse
How to Ask for Help at a New Job - The Muse How to Ask for Help at a New Job The good news is that you landed a fantastic new job. Youâre excited about the company and the work youâre doing, and this position is a huge step forward in your career. The bad news is that this âhuge stepâ is more like a seismic leap: You convinced the hiring managers that you were ready to work at this level, but now that youâre in the thick of it, youâre wondering if you can really hack it. You know you need to ask for help, but youâre holding back., because youâre afraid it will look like you canât manage your workload. Donât worry, the right approach will make you look proactive- and save you a lot of headaches (not to mention time). Read on for your three-step plan to get the help you need. 1. Remember That Youâre a New Hire A former boss opened my eyes to the power of the phrase, âIâm new here.â I worked with stakeholders with complex personalities, and my boss suggested that by asking them to explain why things were done a certain way or why they held a certain opinion- ostensibly because I lacked institutional knowledge- I could make more progress in a relationship or situation than if I dove into the status quo. Of course, that magic window lasted only so long. Asking someone to explain why something is done a certain way in the first month makes you seem interested in context; asking three months in makes you seem behind the curve. Similarly, the time to ask for help is sooner rather than later. You may be concerned that youâll look like you donât know what youâre doing. But in weeks one, two, and three, thatâs okay- after all, youâre a new hire. The issue arises when you try to power through, fall behind, and in month two ask about something you should have been doing all along. No matter if youâve been killing yourself to figure it out, it will reflect poorly on your confidence, your communication skills, and your productivity. 2. Be on the Lookout for In-House Resources If saying, âIâm new, and I need helpâ was easy, everyone would do it. But itâs complicated, because you want to avoid overburdening anyone or wasting valuable capital on obvious questions. The secret is asking the right person. You may assume Iâm talking about your supervisor, or whomever he or she assigned to train you, but thatâs often not your best course of action (especially if your designated resource acts like your questions are keeping him from his âreal workâ). Much as you can network in three directions- up (your supervisor); down (your assistant); and out (your colleagues)- the person or people who help you may come from any of these groups. Look less at who youâre supposed to ask, and focus on those with whom you click. Maybe thereâs a colleague who went out of her way to show you the trick to using the copier, someone who told you that the sandwich shop a block over is far superior to the one in the lobby, or a friendly intern working at the organization for his third straight semester. Someone who goes out of her way to let you know that she remembers what it was like to be new is going to be much more receptive to questions. 3. Make the Most of Your Questions Now that youâve found the person (or people) willing to help, itâs time for you to get hyper-organized. You shouldnât ask him or her a question every time one leaps to mind, and you donât want to burn valuable time with questions you could find the answers to if you spent a little more quality time with the employee handbook. Make a list of the problems youâre struggling with, big and small. Write down everything from your computer freezing up to trouble getting someone important to email you back. Then, prioritize the list and pick the two or three problems you need solved first in order to do your job effectively. Next, casually approach your contact, and ask not for him to solve the problems, but if he would have time to direct you to the right person. (The last thing you want to do is send your friendliest colleague a calendar request and then unload 20 questions- heâs nice, but thatâs not his job.) Rather, treat him as someone who could provide you with a little insider info. Try this, âIâve been having some challenges both with my computer software, and understanding some of the company lingo. Would you have a few minutes to share the secret to getting on techâs radar, and suggest someone or something that could provide me with some more background on the language front?â This way, youâre reaching out colleague to colleague, as opposed to asking him to drop everything and help you. You never want to feel in over your head at work- especially when youâre starting a new job. But the beginning is the time to ask for help. Use the tips above to make the process go smoothly. Set Financial Goals That Drive Your Business Forward
Set Financial Goals That Drive Your Business Forward Set Financial Goals That Drive Your Business Forward Every business should have a written mission statement with a clearly stated purpose that reflects your core values. Your mission statement should be considered when developing your business plan as well as your business goals and objectives. Establishing your mission statement is important in the beginning stages of your business so you always have a written reminder of why you are doing what you are doing and how you should be doing it. Mission statements can evolve and change over time, but they should always be considered when developing both short- and long-term business goals. If your mission and purpose change significantly, your goals will also need to adjust to reflect those changes. Getting Rich Should Not Be Your Only Goal If your only goals are money-centric and financial gain is all you ever focus on, somewhere along the way you may lose your soul to marketing that is either deceptive or not congruent with your core values in order to meet lofty sales goals. Simply making money should never be the exclusive goal of any business. Focusing on increasing revenue without concern for brand and corporate vision is a common mistake budding entrepreneurs end up making when their initial success attracts investors who may offer enticing sums of cash in exchange for their say in how you market your business. As your business grows, its easy to become overly excited about the money coming in and hard to resist the temptation to expand too quickly (which is a common detriment to many business owners.) The saying âpride comes before a fallâ holds true when it comes to making business decisions- being too full of your own successes can lead you to a path of too-rapid expansion that is not sustainable in the long run. Bad marketing and vocal investors can have a negative impact on your brand, and once your brand is tarnished, it can be hard to get back on track â" especially if your investors have a say in how you run your business. It is extremely important to factor in your purpose and values when you set financial goals so that investors do not get much say in how you run your business and so that your clients and customers see those values as synonymous with your products and services. Smaller Business Goals Facilitate Bigger Financial Goals Making $1 million dollars in sales is a nice goal, but all by itself, it is a goal without substance unless you have mapped out other goals to help facilitate those sales. If money is your only driving passion, you, your employees, and the business will all suffer. In fact, studies on discipline, self-control, and success show that constantly expending high energy to achieve success can be unhealthy for you. While growing your businessâ bank account, you also need to focus on growing its people, your customer base, and improving your companyâs overall worth including product-consumer demand and positive branding. Success comes in many degrees, and setting and achieving smaller goals that lead to fulfilling larger goals can be very rewarding. Business Goals: Steps Toward Achieving Larger Goals Every long-term or large goal should have smaller goals or steps that will help you achieve those larger goals. As an example, letâs say that your large goal is to make $1 million dollars. How will you do that? What steps are necessary in order to increase sales? How will you handle the increased volume? Will you need new manufacturers? How will you gear marketing toward that objective? Answering all these questions will help you develop smaller goals that support your main goal of making $1 million dollars. Letâs look at just one of the above examples as a small goal. What steps are necessary in order to increase sales? You might need to: Purchase more supplies to increase manufacturingIncrease warehouse stock (increases cost of storage)Launch a mass social media campaignCreate a radio adTrain customer service staff to handle an increase in sales All the above items look like a list, but they are actually goals you may need to meet before you can achieve that million-dollar goal. Without enough product to supply an increase in demand, or the ability to move products quickly and cost-effectively, your sales are not likely to increase exponentially over what you are already doing. Planning Smaller Goals Is Important The Oprah Effect is a fairly well-known example of good intentions meets blind ambition. The Oprah Effect is an expression that first came about after seeing the effect that an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, or an endorsement by Oprah Winfrey, had on businesses. Small mom-and-pop business owners appearing on Oprah were suddenly flooded with more orders and emails that shut down their websites, phones that rang nonstop, and an overnight increase in demand that could not be met. Growing Your Business By Setting the Right Goals All for-profit businesses exist to generate income (profit) and your goals should strive for financial success, but remember to take time to develop additional, non-monetary goals that help build your business: Branding encourages customer loyalty, which can lead to repeat sales. Great customer service can lead to good reviews that encourage others to trust your business. Developing employees by offering them training, support, and growth opportunity will also help you build your business. Strong businesses are not those that simply bring in big bucks because consumers can be fickle, markets can change, and what worked once may not work a second time around. Solidly built businesses have staying power based on their reputation not just their financial reserves. Create goals that focus on year-over-year growth and positive forward movement by also defining goals that invest in your companys infrastructure, brand, customer service, staff, and customer loyalty programs, and your long-term financial goals will be much easier to achieve.

3 shocking statistics from the first ever Hispanic Leadership Summit
3 shocking statistics from the first ever Hispanic Leadership Summit 3 shocking statistics from the first ever Hispanic Leadership Summit âBefore you can support Americaâs job creators, you need to know who they are.âThe line appears in a recent advertising campaign by the Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC), in which a bespectacled Hispanic man stares down the camera in a crisp white button-down and tie. He represents the huge number of Latino men and women who are quietly growing businesses in the United States.âOur economy is critically dependent upon this U.S. Latino cohort, and nobody knows it,â said Sol Trujillo, an American businessman and the co-founder and chair of the LDC. As the largest racial or ethnic minority in the U.S., the Latino community wields a lot of influence. And yet experts say the demographic is often misrepresented, attacked or ignored by the wider American population. When Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of the We Are All Human Foundation and special adviser to the United Nations, discovered that 82% of Hispanics believe their community is undervalued, she decided to hold an event with Latino bigwigs in business, politics and media. The first-ever Hispanic Leadership Summit took place on Dec. 10 at UN headquarters in New York and was comprised of powerhouse panels on how to bolster the U.S. Latino population.âWhat if we move from invisible to visible?â Romo Edelman asked. âLetâs dream together, because itâs possible.â Though the summit focused on strengthening the collective power of Latinos in the U.S., some of the statistics cited by panelists and keynote speakers already emphasized the growing importance of the Hispanic community in America. Here are some of those more staggering numbers.Hispanics generated $2.13 trillion in gross domestic product in 2015Thatâs almost 12% of the U.S.â total GDP.To put that in perspective, the U.S.â 58.9 million Latinos could have their own country and still rank high in terms of national GDP. On a list of the top grossing nations, the U.S. Latino economy would fall eighth overall, according to recent estimat es.Their economy would be akin to Indiaâs - a country that hosts more than a billion people - and would outrank Italy, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Mexico and Spain.Latino purchasing power is projected to reach $1.7 trillion in 2020We all tend to underestimate our collective purchasing power. But Latinos especially are major consumers who should be able to influence the companies they patronize.Still, they gravitate toward industries where theyâre not necessarily as represented as they could be. Latinos had the highest moviegoing rate of any ethnic group in 2017 - though they comprise about 18% of the U.S. population, they accounted for 23% of purchased movie tickets. But the year before, Latinos filled less than 3% of roles in major flicks. That means that Hispanics are willing to pay for entertainment, even if they donât see themselves reflected in it.That trend can prove a problem, according to Raquel Tamez, CEO of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. She said tha t when Hispanics need experts such as CPAs or lawyers, they rarely seek out other Hispanics. That means that the community is not supporting each other in one of the simplest ways possible: By spending their money in ways that help them grow.U.S. Latinos accounted for 86% total net new business formations between 2007-2012During the great recession, as most new business formations declined by 2%, Latino-owned new business formations grew by 47%. Latinos in the U.S. are successful entrepreneurs, and theyâre employing a lot of people - even more than their non-Latino counterparts. There are 11 Latino CEOs on the Fortune 500 list. To a lot of people, that number is surprisingly high. To others, itâs depressingly low. Either way, it signals that Latinos have been able to infiltrate the highest echelons of the business world - and will likely continue to do so as they become a larger percentage of the U.S. population and workforce.

This Super Bowl Win Is a Good Reminder That Overnight Success Stories Dont Exist
This Super Bowl Win Is a Good Reminder That Overnight Success Stories Donât Exist This Super Bowl Win Is a Good Reminder That Overnight Success Stories Donât Exist A few years ago, at a private event, Google founder Larry Page told the audience that the way he evaluates prospective companies and entrepreneurs is by a single metric- asking them if what theyâre working on is something that could âchange the world.â Itâs both an inspired way to look at things and also a clichéd trope. It also happens to be rather delusional. Because thatâs not how Google started (Larry Page and Sergey Brin were two Stanford PhDs working on their dissertations). Itâs not how YouTube started (its founders werenât trying to reinvent TV; they were trying to share funny video clips or maybe create a dating website). Trying to âchange the worldâ was not the mission with which most great or successful things started out with. Itâs only our ego, afterwards, that creates these stories. And it blinds us to the traits which actually create success. In 1979, football coach and general manager Bill Walsh took the 49ers from being the worst team in football, and perhaps all of professional sports, to a Super Bowl victory in just three years. It would have been tempting, as he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy over his head, to tell himself that the quickest turnaround in NFL history had been his plan all along. Especially when the media had taken to calling him the âGenius.â Except Walsh knew how it had actually happened. The year before he arrived, the 49ers were 2 and 14. The organization was demoralized, broken, without draft picks, and fully ensconced in a culture of losing. His first season, they lost another fourteen games. When people asked Walsh whether he had a timetable for winning the Super Bowl, do you know what his answer was? The answer was always no. For Walsh to claim to know when things would turn around would have been delusional. So instead of focusing on winning or some arbitrary date for success, Walsh implemented what he called his âStandard of Performance.â What should be done. When. How. He focused on seemingly trivial details: Players could not sit down on the practice field. Coaches had to wear a tie and tuck their shirts in. Everyone had to give maximum effort and commitment. Sportsmanship was essential. The locker room must be neat and clean. There would be no smoking, no fighting, no profanity. Quarterbacks were told where and how to hold the ball. Linemen were drilled on thirty separate critical drills. Passing routes were monitored and graded down to the inch. Practices were scheduled to the minute. The Standard of Performance was about instilling excellence. In his eyes, if the players could take care of the details, âthe score takes care of itself.â The winning would happen. And he eventually did start to win. In his third season, they went to the Super Bowl and won. We want so desperately to believe that those who have great empires set out to build one. Why? So we can indulge in the pleasurable planning of ours. So we can take full credit for the good that happens and the riches and respect that come our way. Narrative is when you look back at an improbable or unlikely path to your success and say: I knew it all along. Instead of: I hoped. I worked. I got some good breaks. Or even: I thought this could happen. Of course you didnât really know all along- or if you did, it was more faith than knowledge. But who wants to remember all the times you doubted yourself? Writing our own narrative leads to arrogance. It turns our life into a story- and turns us into caricatures- while we still have to live it. And this was true for the 49ers, too. Their two seasons after the Super Bowl, they lost 12 of 22 games. Why? Because the players were more than happy to accept the credit and prowess the media thrust upon them. Ego ran amok. But not for Bill Walsh. He understood that it was really the Standard of Performance- the deceptively small things- that was responsible for the teamâs transformation and victory. Only when the team returned to the Standard of Performance did they win again (three more Super Bowls and nine conference or division championships in a decade). Only when they stopped with the stories and focused on the task at hand did they begin to win like they had before. The founding of a company, making money in the market, building a career are all messy things. Reducing it to a narrative retroactively creates a clarity that wasnât and never will be there. We must resist the desire to pretend that everything unfolded exactly as weâd planned. There was no grand narrative. You should remember- you were there when it happened. As entrepreneur and author Paul Graham- writing not far from where Bill Walsh practiced with the 49ers- says, we need to âkeep our identities small.â Make it about the work and the principles behind it- not about a glorious vision. Instead of pretending that we are living some great story, we must remain focused on the execution- and on executing with excellence. We must defer the credit or crown and continue working on what got us here. Because thatâs the only thing that will keep us here. This excerpt was adapted from Ryan Holidayâs book, Ego Is the Enemy.
